The Norodom Racvivong Foundation

On 17 November 2009, Samdech Preah Mohessara NORODOM Chakrapong and the Samdech Norodom Racvivong Foundation’s team undertook a mission to the Ang Chum Primary School, located in Takeo province.

Having heard about the Foundation’s activities in favor of rural schools, the Director of Ang Chum Primary School had indeed recently established contact with Samdech Preah Mohessara NORODOM Chakrapong’s team to request support and assistance. As in the other provincial schools supported by the Foundation, the pupils of Ang Chum Primary School lack learning material while general learning conditions remain difficult despite the laudable efforts made by the authorities to improve the situation.

Answering to the Director’s plea, the President of the Foundation and his team therefore organized a trip to evaluate the school’s situation and needs and to provide its poorest pupils with textbooks. Thus, Ang Chum Primary School has become the 5th school from Takeo to benefit from the Samdech Norodom Racvivong Foundation’s assistance. As a matter of fact, the provincial authorities have expressed their deep appreciation to the Foundation for its efforts to help fight against illiteracy to the point that the Foundation’s outreach to deprived local schools is now being increasingly facilitated by the Province.

As usual, following the warm welcome given to him by the school’s teachers and children, Samdech Preah Mohessara first requested to sit and discuss with the Director and the teachers in order to evaluate the general state of the school as well as its most urgent needs. Just as in many other schools, the issue of overpopulated classrooms was especially brought to the attention of the Prince who mentioned the efforts undertaken by his Foundation in order to develop a project designed to address this matter.

Samdech Preah Mohessara NORODOM Chakrapong then proceeded with the distribution of textbooks eagerly awaited by the children. A total of 550 textbooks covering all topics from Primary Year 1 to Primary Year 6 were distributed to overjoyed children while teachers expressed their satisfaction.

After having the school and distributed textbooks to its pupils, Samdech Preah Mohessara NORODOM Chakrapong then wished to make a personal offering to the pagoda located nearby Ang Chum Primary School and which has recently been heavily affected by floods. The Prince thus donated 200,000 riels to the Abbot of the pagoda in order to support the reparation of parts of the ground that had recently stumbled. The Abbot expressed his profound gratitude and blessings to Samdech Preah Mohessara for having thus contributed to the safeguard of the pagoda.

After having completed these visits and having made these useful donations the school and the pagoda, the President of the Samdech Norodom Racvivong Foundation and his team left for Phnom Penh while the local population was saying goodbye with great gratitude.

Ayant entendu parler de l’action de la Fondation Samdech Norodom Racvivong en faveur des écoles rurales, la direction de l’école primaire Ang Chum avait en effet récemment pris contact avec l’équipe du Prince Chakrapong pour solliciter son aide. Comme dans la plupart des écoles soutenues par la Fondation, les élèves de l’école primaire Ang Chum manquent notamment de matériel scolaire et les conditions d’enseignement y demeurent difficiles en dépit des efforts déployés par l’Education nationale pour les améliorer.

Répondant à l’appel du directeur de l’école, le Président de la Fondation et son équipe ont donc organisé une mission sur place évaluer la situation et les besoins locaux et pour y offrir des manuels scolaires aux élèves les plus démunis. L’école Ang Chum est ainsi devenue la 5ème école de la province de Takeo bénéficiant du soutien de la Fondation Samdech Norodom Racvivong. Les autorités de la province ont à cet égard exprimé leur reconnaissance à la lutte contre l’échec scolaire menée depuis plus d’un an par la Fondation dont l’accès aux écoles dans le besoin est désormais grandement facilité.

Après un accueil chaleureux réservé à Samdech Preah Mohessara par l’école et ses élèves, le Président de la Fondation Samdech Norodom Racvivong a souhaité comme à l’accoutumée commencer par s’entretenir avec le directeur et les enseignants sur l’état général et les besoins les plus immédiats de l’établissement. Comme ailleurs, la question des classes surchargées a été particulièrement soulignée et Samdech Preah Mohessara a fait part à ses hôtes des efforts mis en œuvre par la Fondation pour développer un projet visant à contribuer à la résolution de ce problème.
Le Prince NORODOM Chakrapong a ensuite procédé à la distribution des manuels scolaires tant attendue par les élèves. Au total, 550 manuels couvrant toutes les matières de la 1ère à la 6ème année du primaire ont distribués à la grande joie des élèves comme des enseignants de l’école primaire Ang Chum.

Une fois la distribution de manuels scolaires et la visite de l’établissement achevées, Samdech Preah Mohessara NORODOM Chakrapong a par ailleurs souhaité apporter une contribution personnelle à la pagode située près de l’école primaire Ang Chum qui a récemment été affectée par de violentes inondations. Un don de 200 000 riels a ainsi été remis au Vénérable de la pagode afin de financer l’acquisition de terre destinée à remblayer des parties de terrain effondrées. Le Vénérable de la pagode a exprimé sa profonde reconnaissance à Samdech Preah Mohessara qui a ainsi contribué à la sauvegarde de la pagode.

A l’issue de la visite de l’école et de la pagode, et après avoir été chaleureusement salués par leurs occupants reconnaissants, Samdech Preah Mohessara et l’équipe de la Fondation ont finalement repris le chemin de Phnom Penh.
