The Norodom Racvivong Foundation

On 27 January 2009, Samdech Preah Mahessara NORODOM Chakrapong and the team of the Samdech Norodom Racvivong Foundation visited two schools located in the province of Kompong Speu.

Samdech Preah Mahessara NORODOM Chakrapong indeed recently consulted the Governor of this rural province, which is often affected by climatic harshness, in order to be informed of the needs of the local schools. The provincial authorities were glad and honored to be contacted and immediately delivered the necessary authorizations, encouraging the Samdech Norodom Racvivong Foundation to bring support to deprived schools located in this area. Following a field study conducted in January by his team, the Foundation’s President selected two schools to which the Foundation will from now on bring assistance.

Samdech Preah Mahessara and his team thus went on a mission on 27 January to visit these schools, the first one being the Veang Chas Primary School, located in the district of Oudong. Upon arrival, the Prince was officially but warmly welcomed by the school’s Director, teachers and pupils who were all very glad to be the focus of the attention of a humanitarian Foundation, especially one headed by a important member of the Royal Family.

Samdech Preah Mahessara NORODOM Chakrapong a en effet récemment pris contact avec le Gouverneur de cette province rurale souvent affectée par les aléas climatiques pour s’enquérir des besoins des écoles locales. Ravies et honorées d’avoir été ainsi approchées, les autorités provinciales ont immédiatement délivré les autorisations nécessaires et ont encouragé la Fondation Samdech Norodom Racvivong à apporter son soutien aux écoles déshéritées de la région. Après une enquête de terrain réalisée au cours du mois de janvier par son équipe, le Président de la Fondation a sélectionné deux écoles auxquelles la Fondation apporte désormais son soutien.

Samdech Preah Mahessara et son équipe se sont donc rendus, le 27 janvier, dans ces deux écoles, la première étant celle de Veang Chas, située dans le district d’Oudong. A son arrivée le Prince a été formellement mais chaleureusement accueilli par la direction de l’école, ses enseignants et ses élèves, tous heureux de voir leur établissement être l’objet de l’attention d’une Fondation caritative, qui plus est dirigée par un membre éminent de la Famille Royale.

Following the customary welcome address, Samdech Preah Mahessara engaged discussions with the Director of the school as well as with the teachers in order to find out the needs of the school, particularly in the important field of food supply sustainability. Having taken note of the remarks and requests formulated by his hosts, Samdech Preah Mahessara promised to initiate a vegetable growing and fish raising project within the school, following the same pattern as the one promoted by the Foundation in schools located in the province of Ta Keo.

Following this conversation deemed necessary to allow the Foundation do design a project answering the precise needs of each school, Samdech Preah Mahessara proceeded to the distribution of textbooks to be used during the first four years of primary schools. The young pupils were very glad to receive these books from the Prince himself. Both the children and their teaches were all the more honored to learn that these textbooks were printed thanks to a donation made by Their Majesties the King Father and the Queen Mother, which is another testimony of the Their Majesties’ constant care for the People’s well being.

Après les formalités d’accueil en usage, Samdech Preah Mahessara s’est entretenu avec le Directeur de l’établissement et ses enseignants afin de sonder les besoins de l’école, en particulier dans l’important domaine de la subsistance alimentaire. Ayant pris note des remarques et requêtes formulées par ses interlocuteurs, Samdech Preah Mahessara a promis de mettre en place un projet visant à soutenir la création d’un potager et d’un élevage de poissons au sein de l’école, sur le même modèle que celui déjà promu par la Fondation Samdech Norodom Racvivong dans les écoles de la province de Ta Keo.

Après cette conversation fondamentale pour permettre à la Fondation d’élaborer un projet qui répondra précisément aux besoins de chaque école, Samdech Preah Mahessara a procédé à la distribution de manuels scolaires couvrant les quatre premières années du primaire. Les élèves de l’école ont été très heureux de recevoir ces manuels des mains du Prince. Aussi bien ces élèves que leurs enseignants ont été particulièrement honorés d’apprendre que les manuels distribués ont pu être imprimés grâce à un don personnel de Leurs Majestés le Roi-Père et la Reine-Mère qui illustre une nouvelle fois le constant souci qu’ont Leurs Majestés du bien-être du Petit Peuple.

The President of the Foundation also handed to the school’s library a set of documents published by the United Nations Education Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO) concerning education in Cambodia and the policies promoted by the UN Agency in this field. The teachers and the Director expressed their appreciation for such a donation which will provide them with information and guidance for the pedagogical management of the school and for the implementation of their educational policies.

Le Président de la Fondation a également remis à la bibliothèque de l’école un ensemble de documents publiés par l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’Education, la Science et la Culture (UNESCO) et portant sur la question de l’éducation au Cambodge et sur les politiques préconisées par cette Agence des Nations Unies dans ce domaine. Les enseignants et la direction de l’école ont apprécié ces documents qui leur permettront de bénéficier d’informations et de conseils utiles pour la gestion de leur établissement et pour leurs politiques éducatives.

At the end of this first visit, Samdech Preah Mahessara and his team were escorted back by the Director, the teachers and the pupils of the schools, all of them very glad and moved by the assistance spontaneously provided to them by the Samdech Norodom Racvivong Foundation. The President of the Foundation promised them to come back in a near future to keep his promise and launch vegetable growing and fish raising activities.

Samdech Preah Mahessara NORODOM Chakrapong and his team then carried on their trip towards the second and last destination of this first mission to Kompong Speu: the Preah Srae Primary School.

Once they arrived there, Samdech Preah Mahessara NORODOM Chakrapong and his team were again welcomed by the school’s Director as well as by the teachers and pupils. Again also, all expressed their gratefulness towards the Samdech Norodom Racvivong Foundation and its President for being interested in their well being.

Tous ont également manifesté une grande reconnaissance à la Fondation Samdech Norodom Racvivong et à son Président pour s’intéresser ainsi à leur sort.

Following the usual schedule, Samdech Preah Mahessara NORODOM Chakrapong first requested to be informed of the needs and difficulties met by the school in order to prepare future missions. The Director and the teachers extensively described these to the Foundation’s President who took note and promised further support.

Samdech Preah Mahessara then distributed complete sets of textbooks to all pupils of Primary school Year 1 to Primary school Year 4. The children, whose parents often cannot afford to buy these textbooks, were overjoyed by this donation. Samdech Preah Mahessara also offered a set of UNESCO publications on education to the school’s library.

La direction et le corps enseignants ont longuement exposé leurs besoins au Président de la Fondation, lequel a pris note et a promis de soutenir l’école à l’avenir.

Samdech Preah Mahessara a ensuite distribué des sets complets de manuels scolaires à tous les élèves de première, deuxième, troisième et quatrième année du primaire, pour la plus grande joie de ces jeunes enfants dont les parents n’ont souvent pas les moyens de se procurer ces manuels. Le Prince a également remis à la bibliothèque de l’établissement un set de documents publiés par l’UNESCO portant sur l’éducation au Cambodge.

Following these distributions, Samdech Preah Mahessara and his team left to return to Phnom Penh after having received a warm farewell from the school’s Director, teachers and pupils to whom they promised to come back very soon.
